Life Transitions and Someday Dreams, If Not Now When?

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Recently we’ve been talking about changes and transformation for the second or third part of our lives. We’ve talked about the reality of having an extra 20 to 30 years of quality living to do and we’ve looked at the exciting choices and opportunities a new perspective on the outdated term “retirement” can bring. We’ve stretched, looked at ways to deprogram ourselves from limiting beliefs and get to that place where we embrace and welcome change. Now that you are armed with all this knowledge what’s the next step?

Its one thing to finally allow yourself to have a someday dream but it’s another to actually take the first step. That first step is always the hardest. This is when the ocean of “buts” start creeping into your head. You know the ones:

But I don’t have time to spend on myself now.
But this is all I have ever done; it’s too late to start over.
But I don’t have enough experience or money to do what I really want.
But I’m too old; I should have done it when I was younger.

How long have you secretly thought of your someday dream? How long have you let your “buts” get in your way? If you had taken that first step long ago where would you be now? It’s time to stop thinking about it and finally take action!

Here are 5 tips to get you going:

1. First you need to acknowledge that the hardest part is taking the first step. Trust yourself more. You are a competent individual who has successfully dealt with change in the past. . Look back in your life and recall all the times you overcame obstacles to get where you are today. You can do it again. It might be helpful to make a list of some of life changes that you have encountered. Give yourself credit for handling change in the past. You did it then and you can do it again.
2. Make the commitment to take your dream from someday to a plan. Write this down and put it where you can see. Write at least 3 action steps you can take to turn your dream into a plan. Every time you complete a steps add another to the list. Before long you will be well on your way to making your dream a reality.
3. Don’t be hard on yourself. You will be out of your comfort zone; out of the tried and true. It’s perfectly normal to feel a little awkward. That’s how you grow.
4. Get your energy level up. Surround yourself with people who also embracing growth and change and find ways to support each other. Don’t get stuck with the naysayer crowd.
5. Find someone whose life and character you admire. Make a list of qualities they possess that you’d like to emulate.
6. Remember, attitude matters! Become aware of what you are saying to and about yourself. If you notice your spending a lot of your days immersed in negative thoughts I’d recommend you take steps to reverse this habit. Studies have shown the right attitude and how you look at life directly corresponds to how happy and successful you are. Whether you use my system or another, don’t skip this step! This is an important part of your success.

So do you see yourself coming in from a walk on the beach to work from your home office as you watch the waves roll in? Do you see yourself living on a sail boat cruising from port to port when you want a change of scenery? How about living in a small apartment in the heart of Argentina with the man of your dreams and dancing the tango to your heart’s content. Maybe you’d like to finally open a little restaurant in a quaint little village half of the year and visit your children for the other half. Are you ready to write that book, be your own boss or immerse yourself in your passion for gardening, cooking or doing what you really love?
What’s your Someday Dream? Are you ready to make it happen? If not now, when?

The Power of Negative Thoughts – Five questions you MUST ask yourself!

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

How creative are you when you are thinking negative thoughts?

If you’re like most people, your creativity probably goes out of the window the second you let in negative thought patterns. If you tell yourself what you’re doing is no good, chances are it won’t be. It’s no coincidence that successful people are usually those who adopt an optimistic approach to their lives. No matter what path you intend to follow to succeed, if you start off with a negative approach, you’re already halfway to failure.

Do you see your mistakes as disasters, or lessons you can learn from for the future?

We all take knocks and make mistakes from time to time. But it’s the way we deal with them that shapes the way we move forward. It can be hard to think positively. But we can all do it, however we’re made! Some people are naturally born more optimistic than others – if that’s not you, then try to copy their thinking patterns. What makes an optimist? They turn problems into challenges, and failures into lessons. They avoid negative thoughts at all costs. Train yourself to take a new perspective on life. There are always two ways to look at any given situation – always try to look for the positive angle and your creativity will flourish.

Do you focus on your weaknesses rather than your strengths?

Creative thinking requires positive thinking. Your whole approach to life is different; being positive helps you to find ways to deal with challenges and inspires you to seek opportunities. You will naturally be more resistant to negative thoughts creeping in. Don’t become bogged down with pessimism thinking about your failures; focus on your strengths, and build on them. Try this exercise; write down your seven main strengths, and try to focus using a different strength each day. Research has shown people who do this exercise for one week increase their level of happiness for six months and more!

When you achieve something good is it a fluke? But when something bad happens is it your fault?

Positive minded people are quick to brush off disappointments as ‘one of those things’ and put disasters quickly behind them. Conversely when good things happen, they are not slow to take the credit and congratulate themselves on their achievements. Remember creativity requires positive thinking.

Pessimists however are the opposite. They dwell on bad events and find it difficult to move on. They turn positive happenings into negative ones. It’s hard to be creative when your mind is bogged down with these negative thoughts.

You can put yourself in a new state of mind, and learn to think like an optimist.

Read positive statements. Take a whole new perspective on who you are. Study books on the tricks to positive thinking. If you really want to be creative, you really can improve your skills just by seeing things in a new light.

Is your glass always half-empty?

Not anymore! Work at changing your thought patterns for the better, and banish those negative thoughts forever.

After all, everyone always prefers their glass to be half-full, don’t they?!
